Wine is a Windows application layer which lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows. Wine is free software under constant development.

Wine development version 1.5 claims to support for iTunes 10.x which means using this you can install iTunes 10.x in your Ubuntu. Other features of this release:
New version of the Gecko engine.
Partial support for using the Trash on Mac OS X.
Support for path gradients in GdiPlus.
Various MSXML improvements.
Fixes to 64-bit exception handling.
Various bug fixes.

Installing development version Wine 1.5 with PPA:

In-order to install Wine on Ubuntu, open Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wine/wine-1.5.0.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf wine-1.5.0.tar.bz2
cd wine-1.5.0
sudo apt-get install flex bison qt3-dev-tools qt4-qmake
./configure
cd tools
./wineinstall

    that way you get the “vanilla” way, not the ubuntu one with checkinstall

    better to use a ppa like portis25/test on launchpad

    Umm, im following these directions to install wine, and the terminal window has been displaying all these lines of text for like past…40 minutes.. is this normal lol how long does it normally take?

    It shouldn’t take that long! Please make sure to exicute the commands one by one in terminal. You can also try direct method by adding PPA. Please refer the link at http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu .

    Thanks so much for your help. ill try your other suggestion. The only thing i use my computer for is Browsing and iTunes, so if I can get iTunes working normally on Ubuntu 12.04, then im all good 🙂

    Do not use this method. It takes more than an hour to install wine this way

    Yes, installing using this method depends on your Internet connection speed. However, now you can install latest version of Wine easily by adding PPA. Please refer this link .

    Installing Wine 1.5 is fine. Even some of my programs there work much faster (SQLyog for example).
    But iTunes is not working at all – even installation passed normal.

    Try to download and install iTunes version 7.2 using WIne. It should work fine.
